While the Metro Council proclaims “Light rail safety begins with you!” on their “On The Green Line” blog, I tend to think it begins with the Light Rail. When there were questions about the timing of the trains I don’t think anyone thought the proper way to fix the problems was to start blowing red lights, as the video below shows.
In the video that was shot on September 29th, you can see a light rail train stopped at the Prospect Park station loading passengers. It then pushes its horn and proceeds to completely ignore it’s red light and begin to move through the intersection. While doing so, you can see another vehicle traveling down SE 4th St obeying all traffic signals only to be greeted by a moving Light Rail train ignoring the signals.
Nevertheless, city officials in St. Paul remain reluctant to give the Green Line full authority to turn red lights green along 46 intersections with signals. They say that doing so, even at 19 low-volume crossings, would be to the detriment of pedestrians and cross-traffic. — St. Paul Pioneer Press 7/20/2014
